HSRUK will hold an evidence and policy roundtable discussion on safe staffing, in what is the last event of the year in collaboration with The Health Foundation.
Safe staffing remains a major concern for patients, practitioners and policy makers, even more so in the face of unprecedented workforce shortages, with the number of vacant posts doubling over the last three years.
While the impact of nurse supply and retention is keenly felt in acute hospitals – and the focus of most research – it extends far beyond this into almost every setting where registered nurses are needed. Some will argue the case for technology, but it’s not a magic bullet. Professor Peter Griffiths, Chair of Health Services Research, University of Southampton, will look at what research tells us about safe staffing, from the right skills mix to how tools influence planning and outcomes; and where are the gaps?
Lara Carmona, Policy Director, Royal College of Nursing and Ann Casey MBE, National Clinical Workforce Lead, NHS Improvement will then respond, to start discussion and debate.
The event will bring together senior researchers, policy makers and practitioners and is the third event in our series of policy breakfasts.
