The Department of Health and Social Care wishes to contract with an institution for the part-time services (2 - 2½ days per week) of a clinical, public health or social care academic with experience of translational, clinical or applied research to be appointed Dean of the NIHR Academy, following the end of Professor Dave Jones’ term as Dean in September 2021.
Accountable to the Department of Health and Social Care’s Director of Science, Research and Evidence, and reporting to the Chief Scientific Advisor, the Dean will:
- Advise the Department of Health and Social Care and NIHR Academy CEO on policies and strategies for developing and promoting research training of both prospective clinical and non-clinical academics as well as those likely to pursue a mainly clinical or practice-based career.
- Work in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Care and the NIHR Academy CEO on the oversight, development and delivery of research training programmes, which meet the needs of the current research landscape, identifies future gaps and formulates, in partnership, solutions.
- Embed and champion the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion across all academic and research capacity development programmes, schemes and initiatives
- Represent the NIHR Academy at the NIHR Strategy Board by advising on, influencing and supporting the development of research training and capacity development across the NIHR and within NIHR’s strategy and underpinning priorities.
- Advise on the strategic development and delivery of NIHR Incubators
- Work across the NIHR, universities, local government, NHS and care organisations in managing, developing and supporting the careers of NIHR Academy Members.
- Promote and strengthen health, public health and social care academic research
- Ensure the quality and consistency of training programmes meets the needs of those wishing to undertake academic research and the needs of their host organisations
- Provide support and oversight of a Mentoring Programme which meets the needs and aspirations of the next generation of NIHR researchers.
- Ensure active engagement and collaboration with all partners, particularly through the Clinical Academic Training Forum, to improve clinical research academia.
- Contribute to the NIHR Leadership Training Programme ensuring it is fit for purpose and adaptive to emerging needs of the NIHR Academy members.
- Represent the NIHR Academy with stakeholders including the NHS, Health Education England, other research funders, Medical Schools Council and the academic and practice-based community, on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care
- Ensure the NIHR Academy upholds the obligations and responsibilities as a signatory of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, develops and embeds plans to implement these principles which complements the work of the NIHR Academy and delivery of the UK Government Research and Development Roadmap.
- Provide line management for two Associate Deans.
