PhD Studentship in Epidemiology and Public Health using Population-based Cohorts of Ageing in the UK and USA
A PhD in epidemiology and public health is available at the Institute of Health and Society, Newcastle University. Newcastle University is renowned for its public health research in ageing and health inequalities. Focusing on these public health challenges, this PhD will contribute to advancement of science by undertaking research in cohort studies from the UK and USA. The themes for the PhD include: understanding determinants of multi-morbidity, frailty and disability in older ages; reducing health inequalities in older populations; and social and biological determinants of oral health in later life. The specific project will be developed in discussion with the candidate. The proposed themes have important implications for improving the health and well-being of older people and for advancing newer research fields of ageing (particularly, epidemiological studies of oral health and ageing).
The PhD offers exciting opportunities to obtain and apply methodological skills in epidemiology and quantitative research as well as to work with leading national and international collaborators. The studentship will suit someone keen to gain core, transferrable and methodological research skills in epidemiology. The studentship will focus on publication of research and presenting at national and international conferences.
The Institute for Health and Society is a highly multi-disciplinary and supportive research and training environment. The studentship will also link in with other projects through the National Institute of Health Research School of Public Health Research and the School of Primary Care Research, of which the Institute is a part. There will also be an opportunity for a placement at University College London for exposure to other reputable centres of research in epidemiology.
