Judith Smith (Chair)

Judith Smith is Professor of Health Policy and Management in the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) at the University of Birmingham.  She is Co-Director (with Dr Manbinder Sidhu) of the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded Birmingham, RAND Europe and Cambridge (BRACE) rapid evaluation centre, and an NIHR Senior Investigator. She is also Director of Health Services Research with Birmingham Health Partners, the clinical academic alliance of Birmingham NHS trusts, the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Health Innovation West Midlands. 

From 2015 to 2022, Judith was Director of HSMC, and this followed six years spent as Director of Policy at the Nuffield Trust, an independent charitable research foundation in London.

Judith is a widely published health services researcher and policy analyst, with a particular interest in how to bridge the worlds of research, management and practice. Her research focuses on the organisation and management of primary and integrated care; rapid evaluation of new models of care; healthcare management; and organisational governance.
