NIHR at HSRUK18: Engaging researchers to explore NIHR support to global health systems research

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was an active participant in HSRUK’s 2018 Conference over 4 and 5 July in Nottingham. We invited Louise Wood, Director of Science, Research and Evidence at the Department of Health and Social Care to talk about what’s new for the NIHR. Her engaging plenary updated conference attendees on the NIHR’s strategy refresh, which builds on the strengths of its first decade and also looks ahead - with findings from its recent Futures of Health report at its heart.

Mike Batley, Deputy Director, Research Programmes at Department of Health and Social Care gave a presentation on the NIHR’s Global Health Research programme, set up to fund applied health research for the primary and direct benefit of patients and the public in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Conference attendees and the wider research community are invited to engage with the NIHR as it explores opportunities to expand into the global health systems research (HSR) domain.

We talked to many of you at the conference about this opportunity. You may not have considered undertaking this kind of research – here is your chance to explore it. Researchers are encouraged to sign up to a global HSR community of interest, which will launch over the summer and feed into a consultation session on 9 October at HSR2018, the 5th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Liverpool.

HSRUK is keen to share this potential opportunity and support our members and wider networks. Please email [email protected] with your interest, putting “NIHR global HSR community of interest” in the subject title. We may share your details with the NIHR, but only for this express purpose.

For further information, email [email protected] with the same subject title and see their website: www.nihr.ac.uk/funding-and-support/global-health-research/
