Professor Judith Smith is a widely published health services researcher and policy analyst, with a particular interest in how to bridge the worlds of research, management and practice. She took up post as Director of the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) at the University of Birmingham in 2015. This followed six years spent as Director of Policy at the Nuffield Trust.
Judith’s research focuses on the management of primary and integrated care, evaluation of new models of care, and organisational governance. She is Director of the BRACE Rapid Evaluation Centre funded for five years (2018-2023) by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), a Non-Executive Director of the Birmingham Women and Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Deputy Chair of the board of Health Services Research UK. Judith is also Vice-Chair of the Commissioning Panel for the Health Services and Delivery Research Programme of the National Institute of Health Research. She was advisor on health commissioning and organisation to the Francis Inquiry into the events at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, and assessor of the Inquiry’s policy recommendations.
